Introduction
- Brief History
Pioneers
of small sided soccer
|
Perrywoods United was formed in 1991 to provide
soccer for all youngsters, irrespective of ability.
The aim was to develop a community-based scheme
to involve families, and using a clubroom, create
a safe and comfortable environment. A brave
decision was made not to follow the trend of
junior football and join one of the many leagues
in the area. Instead, with the help of committed
parents and youngsters, at Perryfields School,
on September 20th 1992, Perrywoods Multi-League
kicked off, pioneers of small-sided soccer.
|
|
The club has grown enormously over the years,
with 300+ children aged between 5 and 16 now
registered- suggesting 500 parents (plus stepparents,
grandparents, siblings and friends), - over
1000 people affected by our organisation. There
are currently 64 coaches and helpers, with coaching
qualifications ranging from Level 1 to U.E.FA
'B' level. A management committee, referees
and café staff also help to keep the club running.
|
|
In 1997 the club employed three highly qualified
coaching co-ordinators to provide the best in
coach education. Financial problems meant that
a few months down the line, the club were reluctantly
reduced to one co-ordinator, Ian Parkes from
the Birmingham
County Football Development Scheme.
When Ian resigned in September 2001 due to work
commitments, a replacement was found in Nigel
Latimer. Nigel continued in this role until
September 2002.
|
|
Perrywoods
spent its first eight years based at Perryfields
School. A re-evaluation of the needs of the
club in September 2000 meant a move away from
the clubs' home to a new site, at Greenhills
in Halesowen. This site allowed the club to
provide the facilities which best served the
needs of it's members.
|
| In
March 2002, the founder and Chairman of Perrywoods,
Ken Howell decided to step down due to other committments.
The committee
unanimously agreed to appoint Mark Hilliard as
the new Chairperson. |
 |
Pups
is an introduction to football for members aged
5-7.Multi-League players are divided into Minis
(7-9), Midis (9-11) and Maxis (11-13), playing
in internal leagues. Reduced pitch, team and goal
size give more time on the ball. Players are not
allowed to play for other teams (school and district
apart) to stop overuse. Players of all abilities
are welcome, beginner to advanced, players having
gone on to W.B.A and Crewe, amongst others. 12
year olds move into the Youth section, playing
in the Stourport League. This section was established
in 94/95 and reintroduced in 96/97. It gives players
loyal to Perrywoods during Pups and Multi-League
the chance to play until adulthood. |
|
With
the stability of a new home, Perrywoods has
gone from strength to strength in the last couple
of years. Both the staff and membership levels
at the club are at their highest level ever,
and the club is financially stable, allowing
a lot more reinvestment in equipment and facilities.
A development plan to cover the next five years
of the club has been completed, setting out
a vision for Perrywoods' future.
